The rest of the day was spent inspecting the cabinets. Gideon borrowed Mike’s measuring tape and made measurements and notes. He understood how hard times made money short. His salary as chief deputy wasn’t CEO level, but he made good money nonetheless. Hard economic times hit everyone, though, and he liked the Sanes. They were good people.
“I’ll start pricing out wood, Mike, and let you know about how much it’ll cost to get supplies.”
Mike motioned for Gideon to follow him into the den. “I’d appreciate it. It might take me some time to get the cash up, but I think I have enough squirreled away to get started.” Ruffling through some papers, and digging through a few drawers, he pulled out a pamphlet. “Now here. Take this home and think about it.”
Gideon read the title. “Metal Roofing?”
“Installed one a few years ago,” Mike said, pointing up. “Supplies were the biggest expense, then delivery. I was a little younger in my step, and Corey and I got it installed ourselves. Easy as pie. We can get your roof installed just that quick.”
“And it can go over the old one?”
“Yep, no need to scrape tiles. Goes right over the top.”
Gideon tapped the brochure on his fingers. “Thanks for this. It may be just what I do.”
“Let me know, and Corey and I can make the time to help out. In the meantime, we have a couple of slow days coming up. I’ll send Corey over to help with your yard work and any small jobs you need doing. I know you work full-time, and Corey’s pretty handy around the house.”
Gideon paused before nodding slowly. This was getting into minefield territory. He couldn’t figure out a polite way of saying “I think Corey may object to that” without giving a reason why. Nor could he find good reason to turn the offer down.
“Sure. Sure, Mike. I’m sure there’s stuff I can get him to do. And I’ll pay you. Whatever your rates. No reason for you or him to work for free.”
“Well, let’s both keep record of our hours and see what we can come up with as an even barter of time, alright?” Mike stuck his hand out.
Gideon took it and shook firmly. With a man like Mike, his word was his bond and Gideon was positive they’d work out a fair deal.
Now he'd have to keep his hands to himself around Mike’s nephew and not give in to another smoking-hot kiss.
A feat easier said than done.
